Former Crewmen

This is a list of men and women who have served on the Adams. It is totally voluntary (I'll bet you never saw that in the Navy), your name won't appear here unless you put it here. Do keep in mind, however, that spammers can see your email address here, too. NEW - If you would like to try out the new DDG-2 Forum, use this link.

To get your name/information onto the list, or to update your current information, just fill out the form at the bottom of this page.

A few rules/suggestions:

  • As I was setting up the list on this new site, I noticed that over 100 of the email addresses that were listed are no longer valid. If you see something like this _ in the email address section, that means the address given would not work and the person in question needs to send me a new email address.

  • The list is limited to those who have actually served on the USS Charles F. Adams DDG2.

  • I'm going to be very cautious about serving as a middle man for people who want to contact other people on the list. To be short and blunt, if their E-mail address is listed, use it. If it isn't listed, assume that they don't want to be contacted.

  • I have made it a rule to present the information submitted exactly as it is submitted except in those situations where obvious typo's are apparent, in which case I make the necessary corrections. There have been a few times, however, where the submission contained language which is not appropriate for a "family" page such as this.
I reserve the right to either remove such language or "soften" it to something more acceptable.

  • Please do not submit your comments in all capital letters, LIKE THIS!. In the world of Internet etiquette, using all caps is considered shouting and is very bad manners. But the real issue is that I have to retype such entries and I may inadvertently make errors.

That about covers everything, I think. I'll add more rules if needed.

If you would like to look for a fellow crew member, you can do so by doing a search based on the year(s) you served on the Adams. Go to the "Edit" function of your browser (it's on the menu bar) and then go to the "Find in Page" function. Different browsers may give that function a different name, but it should be something similar to that. Just enter the year and let the browser do the rest. Please note that you should use the full year format (1970) rather then any shortened variations. Be sure to check for each year you served. I have modified each entry below so that the years will match the "full" format.

I was the guy you saw every evening in my lawn chair editing the news for WIPE TV, Some of you nicknamed me Smiley or Drifty. I also wore a short timers chain with 1800 links; then, I re-enlisted. Every time I hear a news story about hazing I think of the shell-back initiation. My civilian (slimey-pollywog) co-workers do not believe that or any other "CFA sea story."

We had too many YN's and PN's so Dave Davis, my Sea Daddy, had me serve as Master At Arms of our compartment. Scotland, England, and ice in the North Atlantic. I want to throw some names out - Mike Shull, Rielly Odum, Ronnie Street, Les Majors, Wayne Lehmann. I saw Russell Belile in this list also. Comments: Adams was attached to the NATO Standing Naval Force in 1972. We went to so many diplomatic receptions that I quit drinking for a year on our return to home port. The two most memorable events: 1) During a missle exercise the thing went out of control and plunged into the sea several hundred yards to starboard and about a minute later it came roaring to life out of the water on our port side. 2) Stealing the Marines' bus in San Juan.

Comments: A lot of great memories, arrived to the Duece (4) days before its last Med-cruise. Started on the "Deck" with Lt Capps and a great group of BM's. If I never see a paint can or brush it would not be soon enough (laugh BM's). The first Seaman aboard to obtain the ESWS designated. Thanks PNCS Hurt and the other Chiefs for all your help. Reading about my fellow shipmates make me feel so pride to have served with a group of professional onboard Chuckie Duece. BM Durham, SK Breaux, Sn Barnett, BM Johnny Spears, just to names a few. Fair Winds and God Bless you ALL.

Comments: Some of my greatest memories are of the years I spent on the Chuckie Deuce. I remember sitting at my Selectric II typewriter with my back to Chief Brady's back (inches away) as he worked at his typewriter. I enjoyed my time with you chief! I think of those days, often. Today, my closet is larger than our office was! Those were tight quarters, but I think they worked to create a close-knit team.

Chief Hurt, you were a true inspiration. You were always smiling and positive. By the way, do you still collect Lladro? Everytime I see those fine collectables I think of you.

Steve Kinderman was a neat guy. So was Marty Coughlin. Remember throwing things back & forth through the hole between our offices?

Dupe, you're a one and only! :0) Those were great times. We worked hard, played hard and grew up in the process. I'll always remember those years and when I do, they bring a smile to my face.

Comments: My son just found this web-site and pointed it out to me, knowing I served aboard DDG-2. My three years aboard the "Charlie Deuce" were great. I followed Wayne Jordan back to the Naval Academy for a teaching tour after leaving the Adams. Pound for pound the Charles F. Adams was the fightingest ship in the Navy and a great tour for a young officer to learn what the surface Navy was all about. I still have "fond"?? memories of being Shore Patrol Officer in Port Au Prince Haiti for some R&R from Gitmo. The stop in St Croix was great as well. Only rough spot was our 13 month overhaul in the Philly shipyards. Anyone passing through the Richmond,VA area give me a shout and we'll swap sea stories.

Comments: Reported to the ship while in the shipyard in 79 and was discharged while in the shiptard in 83. When I first arrived I was told about aqua Boogeyman and couldn't believe we had to live on the APL. I sometimes wonder how I didn't go nuts on the IO curise considering there wasn't a whole lot to do. Loved Australia though. Only other place I would consider living. Our nato curise was fantastic and I always enjoyed anytime we went to the Caribbean. It certainly was a great life lesson. To understand how fortunate being a American is. How about the flying fish and glowing waters. What real darkness is at night when at sea and what stars really look like. Six years was plenty for me but I believe it was the best experience I ever had. Take care to all and I will never forget.

Comments: I arrived on the Adams as a new HT3 and found out if you were coming from a tender that it was the same as coming straight out of boot! No respect given by the four year FA's-it had to be earned there. I spent the better part of my time mig welding the deck adjacent to MT.52, whenever she fired off a round you could stand there and watch the deck spidercrack in all directions. The chiefs in aft chief's berthing (below MT.52) were always bitching that the firefighting water was dripping on their heads.

One of my fonder memories was welding in 50.cal machine gun mounts on the signal bridge on the way to the IO. The glare reflecting off my white T-shirt under my mask resulted in me getting severe flashburn the day before Thanksgiving. Next day I had head of the chowline privileges as I was escorted through with both eyes bandaged. It was truly the best Navy meal I ate but never saw. It was a great ship and the crew was the best I served with in my ten years of service. Anybody remembering me by all means drop me a line.

Comments: The Deuce. Duece coupe of "the life" at sea. Can you smell it? No, not Jax, the ocean at night in the Triangle. The feel of 10 to 20 as you pull away.
The smell of salt, the Med, the Atlantic, Basva Straights.
Listen wheels up, ok radiate.
The whistle sound of the Bear in retreat, no, maybe it was the Mig relanding in Tripoli. General Quaters at 2AM. Do the Lybians have a word in arabic, "Battle Group"?
What do you mean we are on the wrong beach, guns what guns, hey why are those Marines over there? Why are they waving so frantically?
Ever slept standing up??
And what is a trifecta??
Bob, tide, high?? NAW :) Seen Corder's new car, lights up where??
How many gallons of oil are left, Chief will that be enough? What do you mean fix the leaks??
Meet the new XO, yes on the Asroc deck.
What's a "trick wheel"?
Do you want those eggs over easy, or less powder?
Yes, Rick that is a "brown trout".
And you thought camels were only in the desert.....ha

Comments: Ah yes! Mayport and the 'Charlie Deuce'. If the Navy would have filmed one night of our lives at the Castaways bar, they would never have recruiting problems for the rest of their lives. I want to send a special hello to my old shipmates Connie Johns(OHIO), John Smith(OHIO), and Mike Crafton(somewhere in Missouri, I think). I was a snipe in Main Control and Marvin Furry(Illinois?) if you see this - contact me and let me know how you're doing. One of the proudest moments of my life was when we received the MERITORIOUS UNIT COMMENDATION for the Middle East Deployment. I've long lost the medal - but not the memories. It wasn't always a party (especially the Philly Shipyard ) - but the good times were the greatest! P.S. BT1 Brady is still the scariest man I have ever met inside or outside the navy. Oh yeah! And Bruce Smith, if your reading this, contact me - I always thought you were one in a million!

Comments: I graduated “A” school and boarded a C-130 headed for Bahrain to meet up with the Adams. She had to drop anchor off the beach and I boarded a boat to get to her. It was around 1700 there was a beer barge alongside. I was given two beers and drank those and then OS2 Turpentine took me to the mess deck and I ate some spaghetti. That was my first memory about the Adams. I have many more, like getting sea sick quite a few times (eventually I got used to the motion of the ocean), 12 on 12 off and when you are on the 12 off we GQ is sounded (that was always fun), and liberty in Lisbon. I left the Navy in 88 and joined the reserves. In 1992 I joined the Marine Corps and will be retiring as a Master Sergeant on 31 May 2011. Life as a Marine on a ship is much better than that of a sailor...eat, work out, sleep, eat, sleep. Fair winds and following seas. Semper Fi.

On the back of my desk I have a model of the C.F. Adams. Picking up my wife at the Philadelphia Airport last week, June 3, 2002, saw the C.F.Adams in the moth ball fleet.

Comments: Good ship, good crew. I served just short of 5 years on the Charley Deuce. Two Med cruises, a year in the Philadelphia yards (twice, '75 and '79) plus a couple of shorter deployments to the Carib for gunfire system testing.
I worked on the Tartar Missile Radar system.
Would love to see her again. I made it to Mayport back in 1987 but she was out to sea and I had to settle for a quick tour of a sister ship, the Tattnall (DDG19, I think).

Spent the rest of my tour aboard the Adams in the Shipfitter Shop. Did many cruises to the Caribbean, San Juan, St. Thomas, St. Croix, Bermuda, Gitmo; also eight months in the Med, and up and down the east coast. Things I miss are: the Roach Coach, Liberty Call, growing a beard before Zumwalt said it was OK, Mid Rats, Card games in the M&R compartment, 72's and 96's.

I was a signalman on the Dutch ship Evertsen during Stanavforlant and we had a lot of friends within the signal force of the Adams. We had great times together on our ships and in several ports. Unforgetable. By the way, I still have the cap of sailor Kencke......

Comments: What a time I had on the Adams. Can't remember any of my shipmates by name but still remember faces. How bout the time we spent in Karachi, most of us were stoned out of our minds from smoking those cigerates that the cab driver would fix. Riding the camels, the trip to the zoo and the trip to the local market. I hated every minute I was on ship but wouldn't trade it for any thing in the world. If you can't remember me I was in the aft. fireroom during the mid East cruise, North Atlantic cruise and the ship yards in Phili. We had a great crew in both firerooms and I made a lot of friends that I would like to hear from. Drop me an E-Mail.

Comments: I remember being in Newport RI going to Pre Commissioning School, and the Commissioning next to Old Iron Sides. Ron Smith and I met two girls while in Boston in the Boston Commons. I ended up marring my girl and we are now going on 53 years together. I remember the high speed record set from Boston to the Caribbean The running of 100s of cables from all over the ship to a trailer on the fantail for testing the shock wave effect on the ships structure.as we steamed past underwater explosives. I think it bounced the whole ship 12" - 18" high. While home-ported in Charleston SC the wife and I had a small apartment outside the south gate and I was a brown-bager. In the fall of 1961 the ship was going to the Baltic and I was going to be discharged on 6 February 62 so I didn't have enough time to complete the cruise and would be let out early or transferred to another ship. 2 days before the ship was leaving I went to morning muster and was told the Berlin crises was on and I had been extended and would be going also. I had one day to get my wife back to Boston. One last very memorable thing was that when Lt Carpenter went overboard (Took the brass door handle with him.). It was on our way back from the Baltic/Med cruise in the north Atlantic during March. And we were not doing 30 knots as some have said. It was so rough that we could not see the mast on the ship right next to us. We refueled a few days later and the screws on the tank were coming completely out of the water. Anyway Lt Carpenter was the one in charge of Man overboard drills. He talked about his birds eye view of it and that you don't try to pick the person up by the sea water intake & discharge because he got caught in a whirlpool The ship we were going to rendezvous with was the USS Boston. People that had leave on arrival were allowed to high-line to it if they wanted to go north instead of Charleston. That was quite an experience and my three days on her was not at all a home like the Adams was. Never heard again from Smittie, Wilder, Kiesel, Danaghy, or anyone else that were such a big part of our life at the time and our future. Being a Plank Owner was a great experience. I enjoyed my time serving aboard the Charles F. Adams. If any of my shipmates are out there, send me an e-mail.

Take away the computers from the OS's of today and they would be lost! Did we kick butt during STANAVFORLANT 1982? Remember the first night in Kiel? I don't. It's not every day the "Old Man" takes a whole division to Mast! How did Philadelphia survive with us in drydock for a year? Remember GITMO and SPECOPS off the coast of Nicaragua in 1984? Comments: I served on the ADAMS as MM Division Officer and later the MPA under CHENG Earle Yerger. I have a great many fond memories of my crew members. I remember a lot of hard, long, hours of work, but also good times with friends. After I left the Navy, I went to work for the commercial nuclear industry for Yankee Nuclear in Rowe, Massachusetts. Later worked in most of the commercial nukes in the Northeast and ran in to a couple of CFA shipmates, notably Rob Nee at Millstone in Conneticut. I am currently working at Vermont Yankee Nuclear Station in Vernon, Vermont. I miss the Chuck & Chuck (Enstall & Strode) entertainment. After I had been assigned to the CFA it dawned on me that I went to high school with Charles F Adams IV, who was a direct descendant of two US Presidents and our ship's namesake. I also learned from this web site that two of my good friends, Ken Allen and Mike Dirks, have passed away. I would like to hear from my old shipmates, so feel free to contact me by email.

I was discharged in Jan. 1963 in Mayport,Fla then the ship homeport was changed to go to Charleston. The ship was the flagship at time and part of the Cuba blockade in 1961. My enlistment had been extended for one year as other men for the national emergency we had. I was proud to be aboard and serve my country on the Adams. We had a great crew and interesting Med. cruises. What great wonderful time we experienced.

Comments: Long time ago on a tiny gray ship, so many good memories can’t remember the bad ones. Well except the mid-watch in Athens Greece on Christmas (with an empty M1). Warren to this day you will be happy to hear I still hate to paint. Most vivid memory is while transferring a tarter missile to an Oiler, it fell and hung to the side of the oiler. It was something to see 20 sailors try and hide behind the aft gun mount. The duce sure had its share of bumps, in port at Naples and out at sea.

To all my close friends down in the hole thank you all for many wild and crazy nights and for the many stories I have been able to tell my boys. It’s a good thing I don’t have girls, I would not be able to sleep at night. I would like to send a shout out to some of the guys like Tom Perry, Herbert (Butch) Baldwin and Leo Ott was one of the first guys I meet when I arrived in Philadelphia on board the Adams when she was in dry dock. I know there are many more names I don’t remember sorry it has been so long. Present Date: I have done well for myself, married for 27 years I have a young beautiful wife and she has given me 3 handsome young men. My life has been good to me since I left the Navy. Our Commanding Officer was Roy Hoffman and the Exec was William Wadkins. The Engineering Officer was Arthur Wardwell. Chief Dutton, Floyd and Kleffner held down the Chiefs lounge, while we did all the work. We had many good times in numerous ports of call with some very good friends. Where are those good guys now? Bassett, Hays, Beasley, Draper, Crum, Musterel and so many more. Sid, my name is spelled Stine, not Stein. You do not have an E-Mail address shown. Go to the library and send me a line. Comments: Well boys, we served the Charlie Duce with pride. I served with the finest men on the planet. We did one of our cruises in Gonzo and Kermit stations with the Iranian Hostage situation, and the other in the NATO North Atlantic. Looking back with my wisdom now, what a ride. I am so prideful of my fellow shipmates to have accomplished our missions. Yo, Johnny Lightning (Robert Kinneer), Daryl English, Craig Luther, Bill Dodd, Moody, Tex Peppers, Chris Miller, Harlan, Tomenchuck (UHF Kid), FC John Gammo (Gerkin Pickles in the Nose), My dear friend Johnny B. Goode MM, Stain, Header, and the Philly bowling team. Anyone out there? Bug Juice, dehydrated milk, mail that took a month, long distance phone calls from Austrailia, England, Oh the simple time. Now it is Instant Message, Satellite TV, and Email. The shipmates before us sacrificed much greater. I respect my fellow shipmates that served before me. It was a tougher time. However, all those that did served with me, you have my respect and memories. At that time, it seemed trivial to do the things such as man over board drills, general quarters, or set condition X-Ray. But, after reviewing our current terrorist situation, our Captain was ensuring we were ready. I am wiser now as many of you all are. It was the right thing. Favorite Movie: Crimson Tide

She had sleek lines and a bite that could kill. She was sweet and cantankerous but gave as good as she got, if not better. As the first destroyer America built from the keel up as a guided missile destroyer, there couldn't be a better ship to preserve.

Comments: I came across the site just this past week as I just started thinking about the "old days", and was surprised to find that the Adams was the last of her kind just as she had been the first. I almost didn't post my name, but when I started going through the list I recognized several names that I thought I had forgotten, and wondered if any of them remembered me. I came aboard just before the NATO cruise in 72, and remember hanging out with the Dutch sailors in San Juan, PR, and having a few beers aboard their ship. I was generally considered a Pain, as I was the only one who refused to participate in both Equator crossing ceremonies in the 73 Middle East cruise. I did, however, experience many great things with several good friends on both cruises, and saw places that I would never have seen otherwise.

Though I haven't kept up with many, not many days go by when something happens when a memory comes to mind that brings a wry smile. My best to all and drop a line when you have a chance.

Got injured right before she deployed August of 73 to middle east, was in hospital till April of 74. Reassigned to naval base Charleston then assigned to the Glennon DD-840. After looking back I regret never being able to go on that middle east cruise of 73-74

Comments: I was transferred from the USS Cascade, AD 16 into a traing center in Newport RI. in 1960. That was a real blessing to me. I soon became a Radioman on the USS Charles F Adams and on one miserable cold day we christened The Adams and never stopped moving after that day. What a Great experience that was. The shake down cruises were amazing. Those were some of the best years of my life. Alot of the DDG-2 crew members probably do not know but the DDG-2 still lives. There is a group of people that are working on a project to move the Adams from Philadelphia to Jacksonville Florida to make it a Naval tourist attraction. The group is called JHNSA. I have been to several of their events and it looks like everything is doing well. I would love to step aboard that ship once more and show my kids and grand kids what the real Navy is all about. If anybody wants more info, e-mail me.

Comments: For a ship built in the 1950's she really held up well. We took her through the Straits of Hormuz, stood on Kermit and Gonzo Stations for months with out shore leave while the hostages where being held captive in Iran. But the Navy took care of us with a couple of beer rations. Two buds will go along way after 6 months out at sea. We were in the first battle group to do the ditch on the way home. We made a pause in the Mediterranean where the Battle Group Fighters scared the crap out of a few of Kadaffi's pilots. The Adams was a fine sleek ship I always felt secure that her boilers and twin screws would get us there and back not to mention the twin 5 in. 54s, Asrocks, and twin missile mounts.

Comments: I reported to the CFA as green as any Ensign ever was. As I look back upon my life from that period I remember the outstanding crew I lived and worked with and the amount of personal growth I experienced. I remember: the wardroom that became family; the snipes who could fix just about anything given enough time; the pork chops that could get "it" for you in half the time; the operations types who always managed to get the upper hand against newer ships equiped with "better" sensors; Deck apes that never lost an opportunity to chip paint; the cooks that always managed to get the hot meals on the tables; even in 30 foot seas; and the chiefs who tried to share their wisdom with a stubborn, hot headed, suspicious, pollywog lacking in personal skills who was too unsure of himself to accept a helping hand.

Some of the individuals I remember sound like they came out of a Hollywood comedy: One Egg Arnold - The slowest cook in the US Navy. The engineering CWO - who looked (and acted) like he sailed in on a pirate ship. The deck ape who thought he was a (good) werewolf. The CHENG who "knew" he was the coolest guy on the face of the planet and could talk himself out of just about anything. The Bosco - The embodiment of the perfect Naval Officer. And so many others!

The CFA was my home. I loved exporing her and could close my eyes today and easily maneuver around her tight spaces. DDG-2 was built for war (packed with weapons, sensors, repair stations, and redundant engineering) and served her country well. I'm glad to hear that she will escape the breaker's torch.

Comments: Where do I start - wow! - I dont normally post in these type things - I could NOT resist! - I get a little emtional when I talk about the Duece - truly "First in Class - Second to None" - I was 18 when I came aboard in late 1985 as a QMSR - I left as a QM2 - ESWS qualified - I knew that ship from stem to stern. I have so many great memories that I could only summarize a few - member of ships soccer team, ships4force band (drums) with Chief Pitts, Charles (Tele-love) Stode, Charles Estall, Ken (Bob) Merrill, The XO (sometimes). three Med Deployments, one North Atlantic, and all over the Caribeen. Winning first place in the talent contest doing a comedy skit with the craziest guys on the ship. Jumping rope w/the Snipes on the fantail, Steel Beach Picnics, LOTS of great ports all over the world, My great LPO - QM1 (SW) Don (Buck) Devoe (I learned a great deal from Buck), Chucky Deuce burgers every Wednesday, assigned as a drunken DAPA, Master Helmsman for UNREPS (and this ship drank fuel), Deadly Teeth Wretching Bug Juice (the Coffee was worse), Mess Cranking in the Chiefs Mess, My friends (there where too many to name but here are a few) - QM3 Miguel Gray, OS2 Peele, OS2 Pulley, We decommed the Charles F. Adams in early 1991, I was tranferred to the USS Phillipine Sea (CG-58), a brand new Aegis Class, to finish out my sea duty, I was at quarters on CG-58 the morning DDG-2 was towed out of Mayport Basin (I could barely hold back the tears). I left for Desert Storm the next week. I grew up on this ship. I learned so much about people, the sea, navigation, life, hard work, painting, gundecking whoas, heavy seas, and dedication to myself and the crew I had the great pleasure to serve with! I have recently learned that The Chucky Duece is being considered to be a museum in Jacksonville Florida! This is truly a great thing - if all the surviving former crew members gave 100 bucks to this cuase we could possibly set foot on the great Adams once again! Here is the link for more info - http://www.adamsclassddgvets.org. Thanks for a great website, and an emotional trip down memory lane - DDG-2 will never die!

I remember on the way to my first liberty port, San Juan, having to give medical lectures on the O2 level on the "pit falls" of partying to much in Old Town. Then I hit port and was right in the middle of it all! The crew gave me a hard time (all in fun) during future medical lectures in the med!! Credibility was in jeopardy on the next cruise!!

I was the lead petty officer in the forward fire room and the ships first oil king. It was a great ship and we had a great crew. We won the Red "E" for excellence in engineering and held it for the two years that I was on it. The Adams was the command ship for the Cuban crises. It was the best ship that I was on for 7 years of enlistment. My name is on the bronze plaque in the mess deck.

Comments: I was an ROTC Midshipman assigned to the C. F. Adams for training during the summer of '70. Because we were the "school ship" for the engineering school at Newport, RI, we sat in port the first three weeks. Then we sailed directly to Mayport, and sat in port for the rest of my time aboard. The crew kept telling us "Middies" that they never spent that much time in port, being DESRON 8's flagship. I think they were pulling our legs...
